Getting started

What do I need to use Crumbtin?

An iPhone with iOS 27, signed in to iCloud.

Reading recipes from posts, screenshots and pasted text uses Apple Intelligence, so it needs an iPhone that supports it, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings. Everything else works on any iPhone with iOS 27: importing from recipe websites that publish their recipe data, writing recipes yourself, units, scaling and shared cookbooks.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Crumbtin uses the iCloud account already on your iPhone to keep your recipes and to share cookbooks. There's no password to remember.

Saving recipes

How do I save a recipe from Instagram or TikTok?

Open the post, tap Share, and choose Crumbtin. Crumbtin opens and reads the recipe; check it and tap Save.

If Crumbtin isn't in the row of apps, scroll to the end of the row and tap More to add it.

You can also copy the post's link, and in Crumbtin tap + and then From a link.

What can I import from?
  • Instagram and TikTok posts;
  • recipe websites, shared from Safari or any other app;
  • screenshots and photos of a recipe, up to four at a time, shared from Photos;
  • text you've copied: tap +, then Paste recipe text.

Or tap +, then Write it myself.

The method is in a comment. How do I add it?

Instagram only shows comments to people who are logged in, so Crumbtin can't read them. Open the comment in Instagram and take a screenshot. Then in the recipe's Method section, tap Method from screenshot. Crumbtin reads the steps from the image and shows them to check before adding them.

If you have the method as text, tap Paste method instead.

The post only names the dish, with the recipe on a website.

Crumbtin tells you when a post doesn't contain the recipe and offers Search the web, which looks up the dish and the creator. When you find the recipe page, share it to Crumbtin from Safari.

Something in an imported recipe is wrong.

Tap Edit on the recipe. You can change everything: the title, ingredients and their groups, the order of steps, photos and tags. The original post text is kept with the recipe for reference.

Why can't Crumbtin read posts on my iPhone?

Reading posts uses Apple Intelligence. Crumbtin explains the reason when it isn't available: the iPhone doesn't support it, it's turned off in Settings, or it's still downloading.

You can still import from recipe websites, or add a recipe with + and Write it myself.

Cooking

How do I change the units?

Recipes are always shown as written, with your units added in brackets, for example “1 ½ cups (190 g) flour”.

By default Crumbtin picks units from your iPhone's region. To choose, go to Crumbtin's Settings and pick a Measurement system: Automatic, Metric, US or UK.

How do I cook for more or fewer people?

Use the + and − buttons next to the servings in a recipe. Every amount changes to match.

The screen stays on while a recipe is open.

That's so it doesn't lock with floury hands. To turn it off, go to Crumbtin's Settings and turn off Keep screen on.

Cookbooks and sharing

How do I share a cookbook with my family?

Open the cookbook and tap Share cookbook at the top, or touch and hold it in the Cookbooks tab and tap Share. Send the invitation with Messages, Mail or a link. The people you invite need an iPhone with Crumbtin and iCloud.

Everyone in a shared cookbook can add, edit and delete recipes in it.

Why can't I share “My Recipes”?

“My Recipes” is always private. Make a new cookbook to share, then move recipes into it: touch and hold a recipe and choose Move to, or Copy to to keep it in both.

How do I stop sharing, or leave a cookbook?

If you own the cookbook, open Share cookbook again and choose to stop sharing. The cookbook stays with you as a private one.

If someone shared it with you, touch and hold it in the Cookbooks tab and tap Leave. It's removed from your iPhone only.

Deleting a shared cookbook you own deletes it for everyone. Crumbtin asks before it does.

iCloud and your data

Crumbtin says my recipes are only on this iPhone.

That means your recipes aren't reaching iCloud, so they wouldn't survive losing or replacing your iPhone. The warning says why. Usually it's one of these:

  • You're not signed in to iCloud. Sign in from the top of the iPhone's Settings.
  • iCloud is turned off for Crumbtin. Go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud and turn Crumbtin on in the list of apps using iCloud.
  • Your iCloud storage is full. Free some space or choose a larger plan.

Crumbtin's Settings shows the same iCloud status.

I have a new iPhone, or reinstalled Crumbtin.

Sign in with the same Apple Account and open Crumbtin. Your recipes, cookbooks and favorites download from iCloud. With many photos, that can take a few minutes.

How do I delete all my data?

See Deleting your data in the privacy policy.
